Mysore Mysore is well known for its sandalwood and silk, its University and other educational centers. The 10 day Dassara celebration is the gayest festival in the city attracting thousands. Tourist places and other Attractions in Mysore Mysore Palace The residence of Wodayars is one of the largest of its kind in India. Built in 1912, in the Indo Sarcenic style, this place exudes a grandeur that is unmatched. There are many attractions around. Art Gallery Housed in the Jagmohan palace the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery has a collection of exquisite painting dating back to 1875. St. Philomena’s Church Built in the Gothic style, it is one of the largest churches in the country and has beautiful stained glass windows. Mysore Zoo One of the biggest in India, the zoo houses some rare animals bred in captivity and exotic species of plants. Chamundi Hills Towering over the city these hills are 13 km away from Mysore. Halfway up the hill is the Nandi bull and on top of the hill is the statue of the demon king Mahisha. Right on top is the 2000 year old Chamundeswari temple. Brindavan Garden The ornamental gardens are on the banks of Kaveri’s reservoir, Krishnarajasagar, 19 km northwest of Mysore. The musical fountains and colorful lights transform this place into a fairyland in the evenings. Srirangapatna Located 14 km northeast of Mysore, the island fortress was the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu sultan. The magnificent monuments, Daria Daulata Bagh, Mosque, Gumbaz, Sri Ranganathaswamy temple and Kaveri sangama are the major attractions.
